Cowes Primary School
Shortlisted for the Victorian Architecture Awards 2023 for the Regional Prize, Cowes Primary School’s new competition-grade gymnasium was created to meet the needs of students and the local community.
Created by Project 12 Architecture and Becon Constructions, the new gymnasium gives students a multipurpose play space, including basketball and netball courts, assembly space, music room, studio, kitchen, storerooms, changeroom facilities, pool and an outdoor amphitheatre/external teaching space connecting to native bushland.
Lotus’ acoustic operable wall in a remote stacking configuration was used to separate the basketball court and music room allowing both activities to take place in acoustic comfort simultaneously. When stacked away the space opens up completely to create one large space for group recreation activities and assemblies.
The state-of-the-art flexible space gymnasium can also be shared by the community outside of school hours for sports, social events, meetings and cultural and arts events.
