Understanding Rw Ratings — A Plain-Language Guide
An Rw rating is the standard measure of sound reduction, measured in decibels (dB). Higher rating means greater acoustic separation. Rw 30-35: Low-demand applications (informal breakout, visual privacy). Rw 36-42: General office and education (speech privacy). Rw 43-50: Conference rooms, music rooms, medical suites. Rw 51-56+: Premium applications (performance venues, boardrooms, studios). Lotus Doors' 125 Series achieves up to Rw 56. Rw measures sound isolation (through a wall), while NRC measures sound absorption (within a room). Read full guide.
Acoustic Design for Schools and Learning Environments
Poor acoustics impair learning outcomes with lower comprehension, higher stress, and reduced concentration. Primary classrooms typically require Rw 40-45, secondary/specialist rooms Rw 45-50, and school halls with operable walls Rw 48-56. Operable walls suit large openings with high Rw performance and BCA compliance. Mobile partitions like Harmoni suit flexible, frequent division without installation. Read full guide.
BCA Compliance for Acoustic Walls and Operable Partitions
NCC and BCA requirements for acoustic operable walls in commercial and educational buildings. Covers which Lotus products are BCA compliant, how to specify for compliance, and common compliance mistakes. Read full guide.
How to Specify an Acoustic Operable Wall — A Guide for Architects
Step-by-step guide covering key specification decisions: series selection, Rw rating, stacking configurations, seal types, head track options, finishes, ceiling height and structural considerations, DDA compliance, and available resources including Revit files and CPD presentations. Read full guide.
Fire Rating Requirements for Acoustic Partitions and Operable Walls
FRL requirements for acoustic operable walls and partitions under the NCC. Covers what FRL means, when a fire rating is required, which Lotus products carry fire ratings, how fire rating interacts with acoustic performance, and specification tips. Read full guide.
